H Mart Flyer is a Korean-American supermarket chain operated by the Hanahreum Group and headquartered in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. The chain, which has a number of outlets in the United States and Canada, as well as two outlets in London (United Kingdom), focuses on selling Asian food. The network also operates a number of Super H Mart stores in the United States. H Mart is the largest Asian American chain of grocery stores, with 61 outlets throughout the United States.
The “H” in “H Mart” stands for Han Ah Reum, a Korean term meaning “one full arm with a grocery.” The term can be more loosely translated to “open both arms to handle” or “full arm “.
This chain began its history in 1982 in Woodside, Queens, New York City, as a small grocery store. The shop is still operating today, but does not operate like other H Marts and still retains the name Han Ah Reum. On October 19, 1998, H Mart’s new headquarters officially opened in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.
H Mart Flyer expanded into western Canada starting in December 2003, opening its first outlet in Coquitlam, British Columbia. H Mart then opened new outlets in Vancouver, before opening new outlets in Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. H Mart then opened three new stores in Downtown Vancouver and Langley in 2006, in Richmond in 2012, and Port Coquitlam in 2016.
In 2013, H Mart opened an urban grocery store concept outlet on Yonge Street and Churchill Avenue in Willowdale under the name “M2M – morning to midnight”. This two-storey and 4500 square feet (420 m2) store is the first in Canada. Currently there are also two M2M outlets in Manhattan.
